Akron Ohio
From a Musicians Standpoint!

Basics: Akron Ohio is the fifth largest city in the state and is located 39 miles south of Lake Erie along the Little Cuyahoga River. The nearest big cities are Canton Ohio (24 miles south) and Cleveland Ohio (39 miles north). As of 2010 around 703,200 people resided in the city of Akron.

Crime Rates: The national average in the United States for overall crime is 3,302 crimes per 100,000 people. In Akron the average is 6,005 crimes per 100,000 people. That is 82% greater than the National Average and the translation is that you have to be careful. Something you probably already knew, but it’s nice to know where you stand when you’re rolling into an unfamiliar town for the first time. Leave your equipment in the venue until your getting ready to leave if possible. You don’t want to be “THAT GUY” who tells the story about how he and his band lost 10,000 dollars worth of musical gear.

History and background: The city was founded in 1825 and began as a simple canal town. Effectively, that puts Akron at a little over 200 years old. Whenever you are dealing with a city of this size that has been around for this long, you are generally dealing with a good music scene with a decent amount of music resources as well. The Black Keys, for example was started right here in Akron Ohio. If you visit Akron’s website you will find that there are some really quirky things about this place. That would be quirky in a good, kind of neat way, not a weird “most serial killers in the U.S” way. For example, the hamburger was invented in Akron as well as ice cream cones and caramel corn snacks, all 3 by a guy named Charles E. Menches. That’s really just the beginning though, everything from the first breakfast cereal to the first balloon tire was started right here in this city. Like I said, things that you probably do not care about but still find mildly interesting all the same. Cool.

Lets get down to the nitty gritty…(as they say)
