Toledo Ohio is the fourth largest city in Ohio and is home to approximately 316,238 people. It is in the northwest part of the state on the western end of Lake Erie, and borders Michigan. The city sits just north of a very historic area that was once known as The Great Black Swamp and because of that has sometimes been dubbed “Frog Town.”
Toledo was founded in 1833 on the west bank of the Maumee River, originally incorporated as part of Monroe County, Michigan Territory; then re-founded in 1837, after conclusion of the Toledo War when it was incorporated in Ohio. So we are talking about a 178 year old city.
Anytime you have a decent population and an aging city along with a major university (Toledo University) your going to have a better than average music scene. Add to that, Toledo is located within approximately four hours or less of seven major US cities: Detroit, Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, and Chicago. That convenience of location alone, makes it a pretty nice place to run a band or solo project out of.
Toledo Ohio rates a 4 out of 100 on the U.S. Crime index. It is safer than 4% of all other cities in America. I know that sounds bad but if you look at some of Ohio’s other larger cities, you’ll see that Toledo is actually a tiny bit safer. From a musician’s standpoint though, keep an eye on your equipment. Don’t go leaving it out in the van for hours after you play open for 2 other bands at a bar.
